1 : to engage in contemplation or reflection (Merriam-Webster)
Meditation is the act of taking time out, focusing inward, focusing on breath, how your body is feeling, clearing your mind of clutter. It’s like cleaning the attic. The greater the frequency and duration, the greater the benefits. The benefits, proven through scientific studies, are both psychological and physical. The psychological effects include dramatic reductions of stress, anxiety, and depression, control of addictions and increased cognitive abilities and focus. From a biological perspective, the benefits include: reduced blood pressure, reduced pain, improved cellular health and increased gray matter— aka, brain mass.
Meditation isn’t the only practice that will lead to a healthier, more joyful and productive life, but I believe it so foundational to the work we can do through coaching— we need to start here. When we want to get crystal clear on where we want to go next, meditate is the first step to tuning out distractions and tuning in to our own minds and bodies. Regular practice builds an inner core of calm confidence and when outside forces threaten to tetter us off the path we’ve chosen—which they always do— we can return again and again to this unshakable foundation and restore focus.
A note about the format of these meditations: Each meditation includes an introductory section which includes information on the topic indicated. Following the introduction is the actual meditation. I’ve designed each to raise awareness of the benefits of meditation, some of the different types of meditation and also tips on embedding intention and mindsets with meditation. I hope you enjoy them.
